Les soins infirmiers en oncologie au 21e siècle : voir le cancer comme une maladie chronique
Abstract
Environ la moitié des Nord-Américains recevront un diagnostic de cancer au cours de leur vie lifetimes (Brenner et al., 2020). Grâce à l’amélioration des méthodes de dépistage et des traitements, le nombre de survivants du cancer connaît une croissance exponentielle. D’ici 2022, on s’attend à ce qu’il atteigne les 18 millions aux États-Unis (Henley et al., 2020). Selon des données recueillies en 2014, on estime que 63 % de la population canadienne ayant un cancer survivra 5 ans ou plus, comparativement à 55 % au début des années 1990, et à 25 %, dans les années 1940 (Brenner et al., 2020). On considère généralement comme survivant du cancer un patient ayant terminé un traitement à visée curative qui ne reçoit plus que des soins axés sur le suivi, la prévention des effets indésirables liés au traitement et des traitements d’entretien (ex. endocrinothérapie) (Medicine & Council, 2006). Cependant, un nouveau groupe de survivants est apparu dans les dix dernières années : celui des personnes qui vivent des années durant avec un cancer incurable grâce à un traitement continu.
